We Thrive On Sunshine

Like everyone else I have talked to (by everyone I mean family, co-workers, random people at the gym and literally every person I have had a brief weather conversation with), the Turner household is SO ready for Spring! It is truly remarkable what a little sunshine and above freezing temperature does for the psyche.

On Saturday, the temp peaked around 40/45 degrees and you better believe that Sean and I were out of the house with Enzo in tow. Enzo has gotten this new wave of energy the last couple of days so Sean and I took him for a long (long for puppy legs) walk around the nearby neighborhoods. He has trouble leaving the the house but once it is out of eyesight he is more than happy to trot between Sean and I.

Sunday was not as warm but the sun did come out. I took Enzo for another long walk before my friend Lauren came over to eat lunch with me. Sean was at work so she came to keep me company and meet Enzo. As soon as Lauren and I sat down to eat, Enzo found his new favorite spot by the sliding glass door in the ray of sunshine and proceeded to sleep through our lunch. He loves the sunshine as much as Sean and I do!

Veronica

Dear Enzo…

Can we talk? I have a few things I would like to ask you about.

We will start off with an easy one: why do you want to bite my sweatpants? Although only $5 men’s Target sweatpants that I cut the ankle elastic out of, they are my favorite and I don’t want holes in them. Baggy with a little paint is fine, but holes cross the line.

How come you don’t enjoy taking a bath? This one boggles my mind. It’s warm. You essentially get a massage because you don’t have opposible thumbs to be able to do it yourself. And you leave feeling clean. I don’t get it.

Also what is so appealing about the right side of your kennel that has made you decide to start chewing on it…today? It hasn’t changed since yesterday. You have a chew stick that you seemed to like.

How do you get the hiccups? Do you notice you have the hiccups? Do you care that you have the hiccups? Do you even know what they hiccups are? Okay, I will stop.

Do you dream? Sometimes you make noises when you are in your kennel. Sounds like you just got getting attacked or just got a treat – not sure.

Lastly but most important, why did you pee in your kennel yesterday morning? I took you for a walk. I gave you a treat. You were quiet when I left. Why so tricky?

Love,

Your (Human) Mom

Enzo: Day 5 Sunshine!

Today is even better than yesterday. Our little pup is learning, adjusting, and growing up quite quickly. Last night Veronica and I challenged him to go 4 hours between potty breaks to allow us to get a little more sleep. It basically worked. He managed to make it from 10pm – 1:45am. Our goal was 2am.  I took him out. He then managed to make it from 1:50am-5:45am! Yahoo! He’s getting it. And we’re getting more sleep.

He’s also beginning to sleep longer during the day. That’s a good thing too because it will allow me to get to work longer hours during the day instead of just at night.

The best part is he’s starting to go farther on walks. At first it was just around the house. Then up the cul-de-sac and back. Then after a bit it was 2-3 times up the cul-de-sac and back. Now we can get a bout 2 blocks from the house and back and he seems to do good. Sometimes it takes a lot of stop and go coaxing to get him moving, but after that he generally walks quite nicely. Right by my side or slightly behind me. He gets distracted by passing cars but I don’t let him dwell in his anxiety so he just goes back to normal right afterward.

We have currently had lunch and had a romp out in the back yard. The sun is shining and the snow is melting so it made for a good bit of fun for Enzo. Now he’s cashed out at the back door in the sun beam! He’s a good one and he’s going to get better!

Later today is our first car ride and trip to the vet. I shall report on how that went!

4 days of Enzo (Part 1 in the series of following Cesar Millans Plan)

As my lovely wife posted, we have added a 3rd member to our family, or in this instance I suppose it’s our “pack”. We purchased an 8 week old blue Weimaraner who we named Enzo.

In the 5 days we’ve had him there has been much to write about. Follow along in our adventures!

After doing much research and reading we decided we were ready to bring home a pup. I have read through Cesar Millan’s book How to Raise the Perfect Dog and we were ready to start following the guidelines set forth.

Day 1: Introducing Enzo to his new digs.

Sunday was an icy/snowy mess of a day but our breeder delivered Enzo at about 2:30pm.  Veronica took the reigns on showing puppy his new bathroom spot and then introduced him to his crate using the “Nose, eyes, ears” method suggested by Cesar. While she was taking care of this I was going over the paper work with the breeder and brimming with excitement as we finally had our own puppy. We finally had a dog to raise our way over the next 12-15 years and have him become a calm, submissive, great member of the pack. The rest of Sunday was spent playing with our puppy and trying to figure out how to establish the best routine for him. Needless to say it’s still in the works, but we’re getting there.

The first night was rough. Real rough. The whining, crying and 2 or 3 potty breaks took a bit of a toll. I decided that I would work a half day monday and go in during the afternoon so that Enzo had some leadership for at least about 24 hours.

Day 2: Holy crap! what don’t we know

Monday brought new drama to the Enzo novel. The morning went fairly well. We woke up, pottied on time, ate on time, played and all of those things. Then it came time to go to work. My thought was to go in for a few hours and come home let him out and head back to work. Well that didn’t go at all as planned. When I arrived home only after 2.5 hours of being alone Enzo had had a panic attack for the ages. He did not manage to escape his crate, but he had apparently been so anxious that he threw up his lunch, and apparently he ate it again. I know that is disgusting to us humans but he was just trying to keep his kennel clean after he messed it. This episode had me re-evaluating our strategy to break him of this separation and adapt him to his new home..

The evening of Monday was much better. Enzo slept to his 2 scheduled potty breaks in the evening. One at 1am and one at 4am.

Day 3: Veronica stays home to puppy-sit.

I had to go to work all day Tuesday, but my wonderful wife stayed home with Enzo to help his acclimation. She did wonderful things and noticed behaviours that we could try and curb. Mainly his energy when staying in his crate. Veronica read Cesar’s book and was able to practice his technique of disagreeing with Enzo’s anxiety in his crate to a point where we can be in the kitchen and he’s across the room, yet he will lay down and be calm. THIS HAS BEEN HUGE!!!! She also took him for a short walk this day and this appeared to really wear him out. We may have discovered the formula needed to help us.

Tuesday evening was no big deal. Enzo more than slept to his potty breaks, however to help him not have any accidents we took him out at his scheduled times.

Day 4: Sean stays home and we make progress

I am lucky enough to have a company willing to work with my schedule (read: boss willing to work with me). I arranged to take the days off an work the evenings to help get Enzo over his separation anxiety issues. I managed to take Enzo for a few longer walks which helped even more this day. I also managed to leave for 15 minutes and come home to no sort of destructive actions or even a whining puppy. We were making it. Another great thing, that shows how quickly our pup will learn things. Since we had consistently taken him to the back door for potty breaks he has learned where to go to notify us of him needing to go. Yesterday while Enzo had some free time from his crate under my 100% supervision he walked to the back door, pawed at it, sat down and just stared at me. I jumped up, got my shoes, golves, hat and coat on and took him out. He pottied, just like we wanted! He learned. He knew how to alert us to take him out! This was 4 days in our house! What more will he learn? For starters he almost sits on command already and he’s pretty good about walking on a leash. YES!

Evening 4 was a little longer, only because this was my first night working in the evening. I must say however I got a lot of work done and had I not been so tired, I could have accomplished more. Enzo did great with his evening potty times and I think this evening we will be testing if he can make it 4 hours before potty times. If he can, we can make it down to 1 potty break a night! Progress!

Here are some obligitory pictures of the pupster!

A Family of Three

Sean and I have now been joined by Enzo. He is an 8 week old silver grey Weimaraner.

Sean found a breeder online in Smith Center, KS which is about 4 hours west of Kansas City. We made the trek on Valentine’s Day to pick him out. The breeders were super nice! We played with 3 of the male puppies but Enzo was the one for us! He was playful but calm all at the same time. Sean and I were so excited but we had to wait until the next week to get him.

The breeders delivered Enzo to our house exactly a week later. Sean and I have definitely had to make some adjustments to our routine but Enzo has been worth all of it!

Look for more updates as Enzo figures out how to be a Turner!

A Very Logan Christmas: Day 2

The little ones were up bright and early at 8. Austin and Wyatt came into out bedroom first and snuggled up until Bettie came in. Then we all headed downstairs for some pancakes. Chocolate chip of course! Later in the morning Maggie and Mollie rolled out of bed looking for some breakfast.

Once everyone was clean and dressed, we did Gingerbread Houses: Round 1 – The Building. For the past 3 years, I have made gingerbread houses with the Logans. I buy the same pre-made kit from Michaels. It comes with the house pieces, icing, candy, the whole 9 yards! We have found, though, that one person does not have enough hands to put icing on the pieces while also holding up the already iced pieces so this year we broke up into teams. Bettie, Austin, Wyatt and I made each of their houses while Sean, Maggie and Mollie assembled theirs. It was smooth sailing! No sliding roofs or sagging walls! They looked totally legit!

We broke for lunch while the houses hardened enough to be decorated. I laid down a sheet on the kitchen table,  opened up all the extra candy, made 5 pastry bags full of icing and then Gingerbread Houses: Round 2 - The Decorating began!

The boys did eventually decoarte their houses but since the sun was shining and it was relatively warm, they decided they would rather play horseshoes. Sean obliged and taught them how to play.

For me, the highlight of the whole weekend was ice skating. We took all 5 to the ice skating rink that is literally 2 minutes from our house. I didn’t know how Austin and Wyatt would do since it was their first time but everyone had a great time!

Sean took Wyatt’s hand and showed him how to balance and move around the ice in his skates.  They slowly skated around the rink. It was maybe 30 minutes in until his eyes lit up and he figured out that he had gotten the hang of it. He still held tight to either Sean or my hand, but he enjoyed every second of it.

IMG_3481

IMG_3501

Bettie worked the whole time to learn how to skate backwards. Since this was her second time ice skating, she had the forward part down!

IMG_3482

Besides being absolutely beautiful, Maggie and Mollie raced around and hung out with all of us.

IMG_3489

IMG_3497

Austin took maybe a minute to adjust and became a skating machine. He was the only one that skated for the entire 2 hours. Sean took the other 4 kids back home while Austin and I continued to skate around the rink.

Once we all got home and warm, we sat down for dinner. We added a few extra seats to accomodate, and it was a wonderful dinner together!

IMG_3524

The night ended with some fresh baked cookies and the rest of Up.

IMG_3531

We all crashed as soon as the movie ended. It was a truly wonderful day! So many good times that this post could get really long.

A Very Logan Christmas: Day 1

The Logan kids, yes, all five!, came to spend the weekend with Sean and I. Following a swim meet and a few other activities they arrived at our house around 5 o’clock Saturday evening. For all but Bettie this was the first time they had been to the house since we moved in, and they made themselves right at home.

IMG_3332

We started by making dinner. I had to make 2 pizzas instead of the usual 1!

IMG_3347

While the pizza was in the oven, there was quite a bit of concentration over a game of Jenga.

IMG_3357

IMG_3358

It was a good time!

IMG_3349

After dinner we got out Apples to Apples. We had to edit some of the cards down to make sure that everyone understood but once the boys got the hang of it, there was a lot of laughter!

Maggie and Mollie knew how the game worked and were able to put down some pretty hysterical cards. Bettie was very literal and only picked the one that matched the adjective. There was no thinking out of the box!

Austin on the other hand was so excited to go out of the box with his cards! So much so that on many occasions he blurted out “That was mine” as the cards were being read because he was just so proud of his obscure selection. The best hand was when Sean laid down “Weird” and Austin laid down “Canadians”. Needless to say, Sean and the rest of us died laughing and Austin won that hand.

Even Wyatt had fun – he and I were on a team. I was in charge of reading the cards and he was the card-chooser. He cracked up the most when he drew the card “Being in Love”. Apparently 6 year-olds find that to be extrememly hysterical. He could barely contain himself!

IMG_3368

There was some snacking during the game. These kids demolished an entire bag of grapes in one night!

IMG_3366

Next up was Kerplunk. This was a little bit of a let-down. It took longer to set up than it did to play but we stuck with it.

IMG_3380

The most exciting part of the night was opening presents! As soon as the boys saw their names on the packages it was all they could think about- “Can we open them now?” “When are we going to open presents?” “Are we opening presents yet?”

To please Stephanie, each kid opened their presents one at a time and I took pictures. Every Christmas, their mom, Stephanie, makes them sit on the couch with all of their presents laid out around them to take pictures. It can be a painful experience so I did not make them do that but I did what I could!

If you coulnd’t tell from the pictures, we got them new pajames! Everyone needs Christmas jammies!

The last part of the evening was spent watching Up and drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows. It was so incredibly wonderful to snuggle up with all of these kids. When I babysat them, my favorite part of the day was at night after they were bathed and in clean pajamas. I would sit in the big green chair and one by one they would come sit with me. One on my lap, one squeezed in beside me, one on the ottoman in between my legs. It was wonderful!

However back then there was none of this:

Caught ya!

Phew! I am worn out just recapping all that! And that was only half of a day. I will be back with the rest soon!

Praise Report….

Hi Friends!

For those old school CFSers out there, my title is a little throwback to the elementary years. For everyone, I would like to report that I might just have found the best husband. Why you ask. The list could go on and on but here are a couple:

Every morning I walk downstairs – ok more like run downstairs because I am 30 seconds away from being late to work – to find my lunch packed and my breakfast neatly waiting for me in the refrigerator.

I am a little OCD – nothing new there – and Sean very lovingly washed all the grapes last night so that they did not have any dirt on them.

I am currently sitting at my desk at work eating my clean grapes and wondering how in the world I managed to get so lucky!

Hope you have a great Wednesday!

Cold, cold, cold

Boy has winter reared it’s ugly head! The past week has been absolutely frigid in this parallelogram of a state called Kansas. We got snow a couple days ago and although it was nothing to “write home about” (ironically I write that as I’m posting it on a blog that essentially acts as modern day letters to our friends and family), it sure brought winter in full swing. I noticed a couple of things that the weather brought about.

1) Apparently Johnson County has the 2nd largest salt mine in the United States* as I have more salt on my car after 1 day of salting the roads than I would have accumulated an entire season living in Michigan. *Note: I just falsified this claim for the sake of the joke/pun or failed attempt at either of those.

2) People REALLY freak out about the possibility of snow! You would think that we were about to get 24″ of snow in the matter of 2 hours the way it seemed everybody was talking about the weather. Co-workers were getting ready to leave early and head home. (I guess I’m slightly biased/unaffected by inclement weather as I enjoy driving in it and the like)

On top of the snow the temperatures around here apparently need the “Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” calling device as they dropped off from about 50 degrees to a steady 15 for the past few days. The nights have been even colder dropping into the single digits. Don’t even get me started about the windchills!

The reason I seem so ridiculous over this is not because I’ve never seen it before, but we’re in Kansas for goodness sake! It’s not supposed to be like Michigan, or worse, Canada!

Other than that things have been progressing along nicely for the holiday season. All our Christmas shopping is complete and Veronica and I have decided in lieu of individual gifts for each other this Christmas that we will go to the KC Ballet’s production of Todd Bolender’s “The Nutcracker”. I’m very excited to go to a ballet with my lovely wife and enjoy the art of dance!

Until next time!

Whew! What a couple of weeks…

The title says it all. It has been quite busy around here the past two weeks. Starting with a wonderful Thanksgiving, the first at our new house as well as a first as a married couple, followed by a weekend having Stephanie and Bettie visiting us.

Thanksgiving:  Everything went smoothly and everything tasted WONDERFUL.

After a few hours of the turkey in the oven our guests (Ann, Deb, and Elaina) arrived.  We all chatted for a bit and finished making the rest of the meal.  Basically Veronica made everything and I was there as her sous chef.  She made the green bean casserole, homemade stuffing, homemade gravy, and mashed potatoes.  Ann made some rolls for us to enjoy and finally my mom made homemade cranberry sauce. Yummy! After we enjoyed our wonderful meal it was time for dessert. Did I mention Veronica made that too? Yeah a homemade carrot cake and homemade pumpkin pie. Not sure if you’re realizing the theme here but basically everything is homemade. It was all delicious!

Fast forward another week.

Stephanie and Bettie came to stay with us this weekend as Bettie had a swim meet. She swam like a shark for sure and achieved some great times for all of her events.  As a reward for Bettie swimming so well Veronica, Bettie and I all went ice skating.  I haven’t been ice skating in probably 7 or so years. Bettie had never been and Veronica hadn’t been for quite some time. It was a blast!

On top of all of these activities, Veronica and I were able to get nearly ALL of our Christmas shopping done this weekend which means we only have to find a few more things and we’re all set.

Back to work tomorrow.

Until next time.
